You get the failure “All pages that have links to files that require a special reader or plug-in are required to contain the specified text indicating a link to the reader or plug-in “
for Checkpoint 6.3.8 in a WCAG 1.0 scan or checkpoint M.1 in a section 508

 

General information:

Many checkpoint groups are nested with one or many subgroups to build up structure similar to the original standard it will test for. to create a custom checkpoint that will not be modified during an upgrade each Checkpoint, Checkpoint group and Checkpoint sub group that is in these nestling needs to be modified.
Below are examples on how to create custom checkpoint groups using the out of the box checkpoint groups as templates

 

Solution 1: Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0

If you use the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 checkpoint group you can do as follows
  1. Navigate to the Checkpoint tab
  2. In the search bar type in 6.3.8
  3. Open the Checkpoint 6.3.8 All pages that have links to files that require a special reader or plug-in are required to contain the specified text indicating a link to the reader or plug-in
  4. Change Number to 6.3.8_Cust
  5. In the rule section, find the section that is relevant for you
    example if you get the issue Text indicating where to download required special reader for PDF files is not present.
    you need to update the PDF section of the checkpoint the procedure for the office documents are similar.
    In the rule section find the row after this statement If attribute value matches reg-ex \.pdf$
    This row should begin with If page textcontains any of then the words that is in the text box is the words that Compliance Sheriff will search for to determine if this the link to the plugin exist.
    At the end of the text box after for example download pdf viewer add the name of the links you use on your web page to link to a pdf reader
    example, Download PDF Reader. Each phrase needs to be separated with a comma.
    The new row can now look something like this

  6. Click on Save As New
  7. Click on the Groups Tab
  8. Search for Guideline 6
  9. Open the Checkpoint subgroup WCAG 1.0 - Guideline 6. Ensure that pages featuring new technologies transform gracefully.
  10. Add the word Custom to the beginning of the Short description section,
    Custom WCAG 1.0 - Guideline 6. Ensure that pages featuring new technologies transform gracefully.
  11. In the checkpoints section search for 6.3.8
  12. Select the new checkpoint Accessibility 6.3.8_cust that you previously created
  13. Deselect the out of the box checkpoint Accessibility 6.3.8
  14. Click on Save As new
  15. Open the Checkpoint Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0
  16. Add the word Custom to the beginning of the Short description section,
    Custom Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0.
  17. In the Sub groups section search for Guideline 6
  18. Select the Custom WCAG 1.0 sub group
  19. Deselect the out of the box WCAG 1.0 sub group
  20. Click on Save As New
  21. Update your scans to use the new Custom Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 checkpoint group
 

Solution 2: Section 508

If you use the Section 508 checkpoint group you can do as follows
  1. Navigate to the Checkpoint tab
  2. In the search bar type in m.1
  3. Open the Checkpoint m.1 All pages that have links to files that require a special reader or plug-in are required to contain the specified text indicating a link to the reader or plug-in
  4. Change Number to m.1_Cust
  5. In the rule section, find the section that is relevant for you
    example if you get the issue Text indicating where to download required special reader for PDF files is not present.
    you need to update the PDF section of the checkpoint the procedure for the office documents are similar.

  11. In the checkpoints section search for m.1
  12. Select the new checkpoint m.1_cust that you previously created
  13. Deselect the out of the box checkpoint m.1
  14. Click on Save As new
  15. Open the Checkpoint Section 508
  16. Add the word Custom to the beginning of the Short description section,
    Custom Section 508
  17. In the Sub groups section search for Section 508 - 1194.22(m)
  18. Select the Custom Section 508 - 1194.22(m) sub group
  19. Deselect the out of the box Section 508 - 1194.22(m) sub group
  20. Click on Save As New
  21. Update your scans to use the new Custom Section 508 checkpoint group
 
Note: Cryptzone does not recommend that you modify the out of the box checkpoints as these will get overwritten back to original configuration on the next upgrade of Compliance Sheriff.
Instead we recommend use the process as described above to create custom checkpoints and checkpoint groups as these will not be modified during any upgrade.
